Scrapbooking Classes:

We all have them---boxes full of tattered recipe cards, drawers

full of handwritten recipes on the back envelopes, and old cookbooks with treasured papers wedged inside.  How many times have we said we wanted to
get them in order but just can’t
get around to it.   Southern
Tenant Farmers Museum in
Tyronza has the solution to
putting these items in order.

     STFM will be offering
heritage scrapbooking classes beginning February 5 at the
museum classroom.  The first project, “scrapbooking with
recipes”, will require each participant to bring a recipe and pictures of the person who created it or made it special.   Along with creating a treasure for future generations to enjoy, Cindy Grisham and Linda Hinton, STFM employees, will teach class members how to preserve and prevent damage to aging pictures.

The class will begin at 1:00 p.m. on February 5.  An evening class may be scheduled if enough participants are interested.  The class will meet every Tuesday throughout the month of February.  The cost of the class is $10 for the first class and $3 per class afterwards for non-museum members, and $5 for the first and all other classes free for museum members.  All supplies will be furnished for the first class.

To enroll in the class, come by the museum or call Linda Hinton at 487-2909.

New Book Available

Arkansas State University and the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum are pleased to announce the publication of Plowing New Ground:  The Southern Tenant Farmers Union and Its Place in Delta History.  The book is written by Van Hawkins, who holds an M. A. degree in Heritage Studies from Arkansas State University and conducted the research for the exhibits in the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum.

Published by the Donning Company, the book chronicles the evolution of tenant farming in the region.  It is available for $27.95 in the Museum Gift Shop.

Here's what has been said about the book:

Unlike many of the earlier volumes on the STFU, which were written primarily for the academic community, Hawkins writes for the general public---both educated and uneducated. Hawkins’ narrative is enriched by an excellent collection of photographs that capture the life and history of the Delta and its people. This very readable book significantly contributes to the available literature and is recommended for all readers from the general public to the academy.

Van Hawkins catches the flavor of the struggle as the union battled for recognition.  He locates the struggle in the unique history of eastern Arkansas and relates it to development of the farm labor union in California, the other major location of unions in the 1930s and later.   This book should be a beginning towards a broader perspective.   Only the writings of STFU leaders have provided these perspectives previously.
